Homeless

Homeless...is that what we really are as those just wandering through? Well, this morning more than a few students got to experience what it's like to be homeless. 600+ people slept outside at the salvation army in columbia to represent the homeless in the area. Apparently as of the 2005 census there were 1753 homeless in columbia, SC. Sleeping outside would have been no big deal a couple of weeks ago, but last night it was 31 degrees. Yes, that is one degree below freezing. And...many needed to bundle up better than they were, but they definitely experienced a hard night. Then on top of that, they worked as a part of shareFest Columbia which is a giant work project to serve our city. Is there any doubt why young people change the world? With so much passion and energy, they just ooze...something. If you know what that "something" is please let me know!! I want some of it.

Hey, there was a 30 year old man, myself, sleeping next to a much older man, sorry Gary, as well! The driving force for me was compassion for what homeless people and what they face on a daily basis. We slept one night outside and could return to our warm homes, hot food, beds, electricity, etc the next day. What little inconvenience it was to sleep outside when you look at it with those eyes. The questions should not lie in what was done by those people that slept outside that night, but what will they do for the homeless the next day, and the day after that? Homelessness, particularly in a smaller city like Columbia, is out of site and out of mind. I pray that what happened in November raised the awareness of those that participated as well as those who read about and heard the stories. Not just raised the awareness, but raised the dedication to end such social injustice.
